So today was SELWG, the start of the new year so far as this experiment goes.

Bit of a final splurge on eBay – some out of print role playing game books, some Star Wars minis and some old Ral Partha dinosaurs – and some miniatures from Discount Hobby, all of which adds up to £74.6.

Grand total for the first year is £738.43

So, how about year two?

Including a bus ticket and entrance fee I spent £87.68 today. There wasn’t any impulse buying which was a good thing, instead I bought stuff that I’d had my eye on for some time (plus two Star Wars Universe boosters, sigh). Namely, The Starmada X Brigade rulebook; two DZ Miniatures Mammoths and two Wooly Rhinos (now available in resin from Stratagem, also available: three cave bears and a Glyptodon – very similar to, but a bit larger than, the Steve Barber version); a bunch of starships from GZG, including a Glowbug ;-) class free trader; and some of those little ‘gemstone’ markers that CCG players use and which I need for Chez Goth games with Lettice. The only thing I was after but didn’t get was the Serenity RPG book.

Last night Lettice stayed up until half past four working on her thesis proposal. There was computer related stress as well. And there’s some sort of bug doing the rounds at work. I feel very fuzzy headed and just want to go home and sleep.

A while ago my head of department revealed that in a previous life she had been involved in the creation of the sort of game that people who read this blog would probably be interested in. However an eBay search for “Romulan Challenge” reveals four copies for sale and no bids.
Not exactly a cult classic then.

Essex’s finest, Hal Berstram – famous for his election blog over at The Voice of the Turtle, is threatening to return to the world of blogging but needs just a little bit of a kick up the arse to get going. Hal, consider yourself kicked.

After a month of cock ups and delays the sfsfw.net domain name is now back pointing where it should. I suppose I should make some time to update the site (especially as Steve F sent me the cover and contents for Rag 48 last night).

This weekend is SELWG which marks the end of the year as far as the Counting the cost of war(games) experiment. I need to update the running total with the past fortnight’s eBay purchases (a really random collection of stuff but more on that later).

Two OOP HLBS Giraffes of eBay for £4.39.

One Star Wars Universe booster in Canada for $25 which is about £12.

One issue of Polymancer for $6.95 which is about £3.30.

Running total is now £663.83

Polymancer is a new independent RPG magazine from Quebec. In some ways it’s a blast from the past as apart from the glossy paper and CGI cover artwork it could have come from the 1980s – articles on when to kill off PCs; on running swashbuckling games; on using dictatorships as backgrounds; on giving incidental NPCs personalities.

The main feature is a scenario based around an alternative history where World War II came to a stalemate due to the combined use of airships and nukes. The actual scenario is just another trip down the familiar ‘HQ loses contact with isolated base and sends PCs to investigate’ lane but the background is somewhat interesting. The magazine promises more background on their web site but I can’t find it. In fact the website – www.polymancerstudios.com isn’t very good at all. But with the current exchange rate the magazine itself may be worth another look.

Forgive me readers, it has been a month since my last confession and I have sinned. I have been to those temples to mammon that are called eBay and Orcs Nest, and I have purchased small pieces of plastic fashioned into the likeness of Han Solo and other characters from Star Wars.

I picked up several Rebel Storm rares from eBay and then bought a Revenge of the Sith booster and a Universe booster from Orcs Nest. All for £72.71.

Running total is now £644.14

The universe booster (the first I’d bought) contained the very rare Admiral Ackbar (so my luck of picking up Very Rares rather than Rares continues) and the huge X-1 Viper Droid. It’s a shame that the random nature of these sets means that only Star Wars fans will really buy into them as the X-1 is a decent sized chunk of plastic and has a nice retro feel to it (plus a brown and black paint scheme) that means it would lend itself well to steampunk, pulp, alt-WW2 or VSF games.

Lettice liked it as well. “Barbie’s new pet”. Oddly enough googling for “mad scientist barbie” brings up only three hits and no pictures. Come on doll surgeons and/or photoshop gurus…

GURPS Romulans and a half price pack of Copplestone Casting Bolshevik mounted standard bearers from Orcs Nest – £20.99

Running total is now £611.64

But, game related stuff sold on eBay netted a profit of £14.81 so…

That clever Mr Copplestone has worked out how to support his family – get that clever Mr Kemp to sculpt some more dinosaur miniatures and offer them for sell over the interweb thingy. And once you’ve been sucked in by dinosaurs how can you resist a pack of miniatures called “Frisky Penguins” (now that’s the name for a blog)?

Well, we can’t let Mr Copplestone have all our money can we? So let’s buy some more dinosaurs from Ral Partha.

Running total is now £264.80

But look at these photos showing the new Copplestone velociraptors and the Tamiya plastic 1/35 velociraptors, coincidence?
