Very True Things

First wedding anniversary today!

And to celebrate, we’re off to the pub to see [info]littlebun. Which is rather appropriate as it was all her fault in the first place. ;-)

[Update] - the pub in question is The White Hart near Waterloo, good food and good beer. Come along if you like, we’re aiming to be there from 3pm.

Quick mention for two sites we lanched this week: Future London and Open Rehearsal. More about the former tomorrow.

Very True Mood:(jubilant) jubilant

365 days ago I made a post about things I was looking forward to in 2005. How did they turn out?

Obviously, getting married and the subsequent honeymoon was fabulous beyond words. (If you haven’t seen them already Lettice has stuck a whole load of photos online.) Also on a personal front I moved house and got a new job, so a very good year.

Doctor Who was incredible. Listened to some of the commentaries on the DVD box set (and is that a wastfeul piece of pacakaging or what?) yesterday and was thrilled all over again by the passion and dedication of the people who brought the Doctor back.

The market share of Internet Explorer did continue to fall. On the SFSFW site it fell from 77% to 67%. This is also the year that Opera became totally free. I also finally got around to learning a bit of XSLT which I’ve been meaning to do for ages.

Serenity was the best film of the year for me (yes I have middle-brow sci-fi tastes, didn’t you know?) and well worth the wait. Can we have a sequel (or two or three or…) please? Batman Begins and The League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse were also very good whilst The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Revenge of the Sith were better than expected (but as we expected total train wrecks that’s not actually saying much).

And finally, I was looking forward to the general election, but it turned out a bit dull. It did give us one last chance to be rude about Tim Collins before he vanished into well deserved oblivion. But for my political fix this year I’ve been watching the post-election leadership battles (Brown vs. Blair; Davies vs. Cameron; everyone vs. Kennedy) with much glee. Politicians spending so much time shafting each other means, we can but hope, that they have less time for shafting us.

Good things I didn’t predict at the start of last year included, Wales winning a Grand Slam; England winning the Ashes; London winning the Olympics; Judge Jones putting both boots into the Intelligent Design movement. :-)

The guys I work with are the best. They bought me an iPod Nano as a wedding present. Though I guess I have to share it with Lettice…

Two days from now and the ceremony will be over, we’ll be welcoming our guests at the reception, having our photograph taken and getting ready to sit down to dinner.

Of course, you only need to see what my beloved has written to realise what sort of madness the next forty eight hours will be filled with.

This may be the last time I have Internet access for a while. Please try not to break the Internet whilst I’m away.

PS. We did briefly consider a honeymoon in New Orleans. Then we discovered that the weather was a bit risky at this time of year. The events there this week put our problems into perspective.

And why does he keep on leaving his keys in boxes of furniture[1]?

Yesterday we visited the People’s Democratic Republic of Ikea. They told us lies (along the lines of “the delivery men will phone half an hour before the arrive”).

Today we’re in flat pack furniture land. And trying to clean the oven at the old flat at the same time. Take out shelves, place in garden, spray with oven cleaner, wait for rain. Bingo.

Tomorrow the bed gets delivered. Will it fit up the stairs? I have my doubts. If it doesn’t then it’s back to the PDRI for a self assembly bed.

Moving house is a great way to lose weight before a wedding. Very Sweaty Thing. But you didn’t want to know that.

Three weeks from today we’ll be checking in for our honeymoon flights to Canada.

[1]In case you were actually wondering

We’re (okay, I am) being somewhat slack about keeping people informed about the wedding plans.

But now you can find out more from http://www.lettice.net/wedding/.

Most importantly look at the wedding list and buy us stuff. ‘cos we’re greedy so and sos, but you love us really. ;-)

One half of a phone conversation between pink_weasel and her mother with interruptions from myself:-

PW: We’re going up to town later to buy Steve a wedding shirt.

PW: Yes, and cuff holes!
VTT: Cuff links.
PW: Cuff links.

PW: So what do you call the other bit? The holes?
VTT: The holes come free with the shirt.
PW: Apparantly, the holes come free with the shirt.
[Laughter at both ends of the phone line]

And I know this will keep them both amused all day long. :-)

Oh, so pink_weasel tagged me for this one.

  1. Total volume of music files on my computer?

8Mb - a grand total of two songs at the moment (one Tanita Tikaram and one Madeleine Peyroux). But now I’m commuting again I may finally catch up with the world and get a MP3 player. Or someone could buy us his and hers iPods as wedding gifts. ;-)

  2. The last CD I bought was?

Crikey, I think it was The Zutons last summer. Though I did blag a freebie copy 69 Love Songs by The Magnetic Fields (through investing in their record company) more recently. Time to go shopping.

  3. Song playing right now:

    Orgasm Addict by The Buzzcocks

  4. Five songs I listen to a lot or that mean a lot to me:
    • And I Think Of You - Tanita Tikaram
    • Very Long Ride - Adam Ant
    • Ever Fallen In Love With Someone (You Shouldn’t've Fallen In Love With)? - The Buzzcocks
    • My Baby Loves a Bunch of Authors - Moxy Früvous
    • Misterioso - Thelonious Monk

Why? They’re all just songs that have stuck in my mind over the years, and I’m too lazy to analyse whethere there might be some reason as to why each one stuck when and as it did.

  5. Which 5 people are you passing this baton to, why?

As there are fewer than five people on my friends list who haven’t done this I’m going to let this thread of the meme die.

… but this year is special. This year is the only (touch wood, cross fingers, and so on) year in which I get to send St Valentine’s Day love to my fiancée.

The date and venue have been confirmed. Saturday, September 3rd 2005. London Wetland Centre.
